"I recently got in touch with the young, multi-talented hip hop artist Marvill Martin, aka Marvillous Beats, who makes magic in the D.C. area, which just so happens to be my home-place! Not only have I been lucky to live near this musical beast, I was able to witness his creative genius at a local Busboys and Poets! "Groundbreaking MC Slick Rick played his eighth annual birthday show (in celebration of his 53rd birthday) at NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday (1/20). He was backed by DJ Kaos and two backing singers, and he brought out surprise guests, including Redman (who has been active with Method Man lately). The crowd was super into it and much of the night was a big singalong, Rick’s son Rick Jr was a guest, and he also presented his father with a birthday cake for the occasion. Pictures of the party are in the gallery...

"The invitation for Press Night included information as vague as "preview season 28 designer collections," and as specific as "music by violinist Marvill 'Marvillous Beats' Martin." Entering Georgetown's Melrose Hotel, I had no idea what to expect. From outside the double doors I heard the faint thrum of electric violin, Marvill's siren call... The cocktail portion of the evening was upstairs. I sipped an $8 drink as Marvill continued to shred the violin in the corner..."
